Edge Computing: Kubernetes on Azure Stack HCI
Confidential Enterprise (Regulated Sector)
Context
A regulated enterprise requiring Kubernetes workloads at edge locations where cloud connectivity was intermittent or restricted. The organisation needed to run cloud-native applications closer to operational sites whilst maintaining centralised governance and security controls.
Challenge
Deploy and operate production-grade Kubernetes clusters at edge locations on Azure Stack HCI, with full IDLC automation, Azure EntraID integration for identity management, and a repeatable pattern for onboarding vendor-managed applications.
Approach
Implemented AKS on Azure Stack HCI with end-to-end platform automation using Terraform, Terragrunt, and GitHub Actions. Designed ARM and Bicep templates for edge infrastructure provisioning, iterated using Azure HCI Jumpstart patterns, and established EntraID-based IAM with application onboarding workflows. Worked closely with software vendors to support application containerisation and deployment.
Delivery
Phased delivery: edge infrastructure setup and AKS deployment (4 weeks), platform networking and IAM configuration (3 weeks), application onboarding pipeline and vendor coordination (5 weeks). Parallel AWS-based cloud migration workstream using Terraform and Ansible for infrastructure bootstrapping.
Outcomes
